GETTING AROUND TOWN
The Bus System Made Easy
These three bus lines (not numbered this way in real life) are the ones you are most
likely to use.
1
2
3
1
Blue Busses marked “ Hotels, Marina, Aeoroporto, El Centro ” travel between the
airport, resorts & Marina to North and Old Town to the South through town along
the Malecón. 6.5 Pesos either way. Have correct change.
2
Busses (not sure of color) marked “Hotels, Marina, Aeoroporto, & TUNEL travel
between airport etc and Old Town through the Tunel inland of the city. Both lines
end up in Old Town, this one bypasses El Centro and the Malecón. 6.5 Pesos.
3
Green Busses marked “Mismaloya, Boca de Tomatlan, Botanical Garden,
& El Tuito” travels betwen Old town to the North and El Tuito to the South .
7 Pesos to Mismaloya and 20 pesos to El Tuito.

If you are going anywhere other than El Centro / Old Town, ask the cab driver what
the fare will be. The above are guidelines for districts further away from Avalon.
Tips are not required, unless you feel it is warranted. The local custom is not to tip,
unfortunately many visitors do not know this and tip as they do at home, the result is
that the locals have a hard time getting a taxi when they may urgently need one, the
taxi will bypass them looking for a tourist who will tip them and pay more for the trip
than necessary.
Tips from drivers on where to eat etc. are not reliable (they will be getting a
kickback). There have been some recent complaints of taxi drivers taking people to
different places than requested because of this. If the driver tells you the place is
closed or he doesn't know where it is - take another taxi. If he takes you somewhere
else anyway, find police officer - they all speak English, this will help us get rid of the
bad drivers. Also taxi drivers may not know the street names. Even local residents
don't know the names of the streets. But the do know the names of the places you
are going for the most part.

THE MALECON
Hotel Rosita
The Malecón is Puerto Vallartaʼs
3/4 -mile seawall promenade. 20
blocks long, it runs from Hotel
Rosita at 31 de Octubre Street in
the north to Los Arcos Amphitheater
at Zaragoza Street in the south.
Molina de
Agua
Isla Rio Cuale Shops & Restaurants
Then, it continues across the Rio Cualé
Bridge to Molina De Agua. Thatʼs where
Los Meurtos Beach begins.
From the bridge, you can drop down to the
shaded walkway up the center of the
Island and take in the shops, galleries and
restaurants. there.
The Malecón is the center of public life in
Vallarta. Day or night, thereʼs always
something happening on the Malecón.
4
MALECON SCULPTURES
The Malecon is also the place to see some of Puerto Vallartaʼs most famous
sculptures. Begin your walking tour on the north end by Hotel Rosita.
“The Millenium” by Mathis Lídice, 2001
The first sculpture on the north end of the Malecón,
“The Millenium” spirals upwards and represents the
evolution of life. At the bottom of the piece, youʼll find
two of the basic components of life – a DNA double
helix and a dividing cell. As you follow the spiral up,
youʼll see an octopus, fish, frogs, and lizards. The first
human depicted is a sword-wielding Charlemagne,
king of the Franks in the 8th and 9th centuries. Next is
Nezahualcoyotl, the poet-king of Texcoco in 15th
century Mexico. At the pinnacle of the sculpture is a
female figure, a dove in her outstretched hands –
perhaps signifying Lídiceʼs hope for a peaceful future?
“The Unicorn of Good Luck” by Anibal Riebeling, 2011
This is the newest work on the Malecón and has been on
display since January 2011.
“La Nostalgia” (“Nostalgia”) by Ramiz Barquet, 1984
One of the most popular sculptures in town, Barquetʼs
“Nostalgia” is a tribute to his relationship with his wife, the
painter Nelly Barquet.
The two planned to marry when they were young, but they
lost touch, married other people, and each had children.
After twenty-seven years, Ramiz and Nelly finally met again
in Mexico and married. The sculpture depicts the
silhouettes of two people sitting side-by-side and looking in
the same direction toward the city.
5
MALECON SCULPTURES
“Naturaleza como Madre” (“Nature As Mother”) by
Tapatio Adrian Reynoso
Perhaps the most abstract piece on the Malecón, this
sculptureʼs organic curves depict a crashing wave with
human features (arms and a face) perched on top of a
spiraling snail shell. “Nature As Mother” is widely said to
represent the cycle of life and death. Interestingly, when
looked at from the side, the sculpture as a whole also
resembles a pelican or other water bird.
“El Sutil Comepiedras” (“The Subtle Rock-Eater”) by
Jonas Gutiérrez, 2006
“The Subtle Rock-Eater” by Guadalajara sculptor Jonas
Gutiérrez is a surreal sculpture made of bronze and
obsidian. It depicts a male figure whose clothes appear to
be melting. With his right hand, the figure holds a few
stones, and with his left, heʼs about to drop an egg-shaped
stone into his mouth.
“La Rotunda del Mar” (“The Rotunda of the Sea”) by
Alejandro Colunga, 1997
Also from Guadalajara, self-taught painter and sculptor
Alejandro Colunga has created what is certainly the most
surreal piece on the Malecón. “The Rotunda of the Sea”
consists of a number of high-backed bronze chairs that
mix fantastic human features and nautical imagery – one
chair is topped with an octopus, others are humans with
an old diving helmet and what looks to be a periscope.
Facing all of the chairs is a bench with two giant human
ears. This installation is not only interesting to look at, but
itʼs also a great spot to take a break, sit down, and watch
the sea.
6
MALECON SCULPTURES
“In Search of Reason” by Sergio Bustamante, 1999
This third surrealistic piece on the Malecón is another that
makes people stop and look. It features one of Bustamanteʼs
famous triangular-headed, robed figures standing with its
arms outstretched at the bottom of a tall ladder. Near the top
of the ladder there are two smaller figures reaching out to
the sky. Many people speculate that the figure on the ground
is the mother, calling out to her two children on the ladder.
Itʼs not uncommon to see people climbing this sculpture and
having their picture taken.
“Caballeo del Mar” (“The Seahorse”)
by Rafael Zamarripa, 1976
The first sculpture to appear on the Malecón, “The
Seahorse” is also the most famous. Depicting a waving boy
riding a giant seahorse, this sculpture has become a symbol
of Puerto Vallarta.
“Triton and the Nereid” by Carlos Espino, 1990
Mexico City sculptor Carlos Espinoʼs focus on the human
form and classical mythology can be seen in this piece,
which depicts Triton (son and herald of Poseidon, the Greek
god of the sea) reaching out to a Nereid (a Greek sea
nymph).
7
MALECON SCULPTURES
“La Fuente de la Amistad” (“The Friendship Fountain”)
by James “Bud” Bottoms, 1987
Puerto Vallarta and Santa Barbara, California have been
sister cities since 1972. Santa Barbara sculptor James
Bottoms created this fountain with three leaping dolphins
as a gift to PV.
Mr. Bottoms chose dolphins for the sculpture because the
Chumash Indian word for dolphin, alulquoy, also means “to
go around, to protect, and to go in peace.”
Angel de la Esperanza y Mensajero de la Paz” (“Angel
of Hope and Messenger of Peace”) by Hector Manuel
Montes García, 2008
This sculpture stands near Los Arcos Amphitheater and
depicts an angel holding his hands out and looking up at
the sky.
The sculptor, Hector Manuel Montes García, is a native of
Puerto Vallarta. A plaque under the piece says, “Always
with the hope of goodness and equality for everybody,
wisdom, love, and peace for humanity.”
Bailarines de Vallarta ” (“Vallarta Dancers”) by Jim
Demetro, 2006
Inspired after seeing Vallartaʼs famous Xiutla dance troupe
performing the Jarabe Tapatío (Mexican Hat Dance), Jim
Demetro decided to honor this national dance of Mexico
with a sculpture.
The life-sized figures are unique among Vallartaʼs
sculptures for their colored patinas. Under “Vallarta
Dancers,” there is a plaque with the following message
from Demetro: “The inspiration for the sculpture is the
youthful energy, flowing movement, and colorful costumes
of the talented Xiutla dancers and their instructor and
choreographer Prof. Enrique Barrios Limón.”
8
MALECON SCULPTURES
Eriza-Dos ” (“Standing on End”) by Blu (Maritza
Vasquez), 2007
Located near the beginning of the new Malecón extension,
these two oxidized steel sculptures resemble sea urchins.
San Pascual Bailón ” (“Saint Paschal Baylon”) by Ramiz
Barquet, 2008
Saint Paschal Baylon was a Franciscan friar in 16th century
Spain. Today, he is considered the patron saint of cooks; this
sculpture honors chefs from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and
abroad.
It is located in front of Vitea Bistro Bar and Café. There are
plaques in the sidewalk recognizing outstanding PV chefs.
SAND SCULPTURES ON THE MALECON
As you walk along the Malecón, youʼll notice sand sculptures on the beach. These
artists are not paid and work only for the tips left in the containers in front of their
works. The pieces last only a couple of weeks. New works appear regularly.
9
ARTWALK
Puerto Vallarta has a thriving community of artists. Every Wednesday from October to
May, take a self guided walking tour through the galleries in the Centro Historico
District from 6PM - 10PM. Some of the galleries serve complimentary cocktails and
wine. Itʼs a great opportunity to wander through the side streets of El Centro.
But use this map as a guide to the Galleries in El Centro all year long. They are open
daily and you can drop by anytime.
10
PUERTO VALLARTA NAIF ARTISTS
Manuel Lepe was born in Puerto Vallarta on April 17, 1936 and was the creator of the “naif
style,” which is popularly referred to as “ Vallarta Art .”
Lepeʼs “Los Perritos” hangs in our living room.
We also found a copy at the Paco Studio and
Gallery in town.
You can see an example of Lepeʼs work in
the stained glass window of Plaza Vallarta
on the right side of the main square in front
of the Cathedral.
Also one of his works is represented in tile on
the Malecón just south of the Amphitheater
behind the Maritime Museum.
When asked about why some of the angels are
in airplanes he said, “Angels get tired plus itʼs a
lot of fun.”
11
PUERTO VALLARTA NAIF ARTISTS
Lepeʼs gentle and innocent vision would generate a group of followers: his brother Rodrigo
Lepe, Ada Colorina, Javier Niño and Gilberto Grimaldo, all self-taught artists, who
instinctively started painting at an early age.
However, though they all inherit Lepe's vision, each artist portrays his own approach to
paradise.
Ada Colorina presents a world that is
essentially Mexican in nature, where her
figures playfully follow their trade among a
profusion of colors. Locals often recognize
the people and things in her paintings from
real life on the streets in Puerto Vallarta.
We went to the artistʼs studio north of town
where she was working on a new painting
while her young niece and nephew were
drawing with crayons.
In Javier Niño's work on the other
hand, nature is the most striking
element and materializes in almost
fantastical bursts.
If youʼd like to see works by these PV artists and
others, visit: The Genius of Paco Studio &
Gallery , Venustiano Carranza 512, Zona
Romantica. M-F 11A-7P, Sat 11A-2P.
12
ISLA RIO CUALE FLEA MARKET
If you like to shop, the island in the middle of the Rio Cualle is the place for you. It runs from the
beach up river several blocks. The island is accessible from the Malecon bridge at the beach and
also the two bridges that carry traffic in and out of old Town. Lots of chat-ski's, galleries and
restaurants. Take a leisurely stroll along the tree shaded walkway and enjoy the sights.
LOS MEURTOS BEACH
Heading South from Molina de Agua, the Malecón ends and Los Meurtos Beach begins.
Restaurants with palapaʼs in the sand line beach.
There are vendors, time share salesmen, guys
with shrimp on a stick, the “are you ready... hereʼs
Johnny” man with plates of fresh oysters on ice
that melted long ago and beach goers of all sizes
and shapes out for a day in the sun.
Pier
La Palapa
El Dorado
Swell
Pack a couple of towels, some sun tan lotion, and
whatever youʼll need for the day and head down to
the Pier at the foot of Francisca Rodriguez. From
there, walk south along the beach until you find the
ideal spot. Settle in for lunch, drinks, and a
leisurely afternoon under a palapa. What could be
better on a warm day in Puerto Vallarta.

Molina de Agua
ADVENTURES SOUTH OF TOWN
While the North Shore of Banderas Bay is the scene of major resort development,
the South Shore has remained remarkably untouched. With itʼs hidden beaches,
jungles, and villages accessible only by boat, this is an area thatʼs fun to explore and
easily accessibly by public transportation.
Heading south by bus for a day trip is an adventure to remember.
15. Vallarta Zoo
16. Boca de Tomatlan
16. Villages
accessible only by
boat
19. El Tuito
18. Botanical Gardens
Mayto/Tehuamixtle
All of these areas except Mayto/Tehuamixtle are accessible by bus and water taxi.
Bus service in the Puerto Vallarta area is excellent. The schedules are frequent and
prices very affordable.
Join the locals and see the area from a different perspective.
14
ZOOLOGICO DE VALLARTA
The Zoo in Puerto Vallarta
is unique. You are
encouraged to feed the
animals with bags of food
that the Zoo sells. Itʼ s
really great fun. Also, the
Zoo has a big cat breeding
program and on most days,
you can actually hold a
Lion or Panther Cub for a
100 peso or so fee.
Zoologico de Vallarta is located
in one of Puerto Vallarta's most
exotic areas, surrounded by an
impressive Jungle.
Located in the town of Mismaloya
on a side road in a river canyon,
the Vallarta zoo provides a natural
habitat for it’s animal collection.
¿How do you get to the Zoo?
Automobile: Take the highway to Barra de
Navidad, at a the entrance of hotel "Barcelo la
joya de Mismaloya", just turn into the deviation
that is to the left side and runs parallel to the
river, after having traveled 800 meters you will
find The Zoologico de Vallarta.
Public transportation: Take the
Mismaloya bus at the intersection of Basilio
Badillo and Insurgentes in Old Town. Get off at
the entrance to Hotel Barcelo in Mismaloya.
Cross the street and follow the road closest to
the river 800 meters you’ll be there. Or go into
Resort and take a Cab.
You can also take a cab directly from town. Price approximately 200 Pesos. Check with
Cab driver before you go.
15
LAS ANIMAS / YELAPA
MX 200 turns inland from the coast at the small fishing village of Boca de Tomatlan .
Here you can take a panga further south along the picturesque coast to several
small villages accessible only by boat.
The first town is Yelapa , a couple of miles
down the coast from Boca. It is a cluster of
several small restaurants on the wide sandy
beach. Menus feature fresh seafood.
Walks along the beach are wonderful.
Weʼve hiked the trail that heads along
the rocky coast back
towards Boca through
the cocoanut palms and
as far as Troza, a
deserted rustic resort.
I would not recommend
trying to walk from Boca
to Las Animas. It is
pretty steep near Boca
and the sandy beach is
problematic at high tide.
Walking along the beach
from Las Animas as far
as the resort is an easy
hike.
16
LAS ANIMAS / YELAPA
Further down the coast is
Yelapa, a small village of about
1500. It has a hotel and several
beachfront restaurants. You
can hike up into the jungle to a
waterfall or just hang out at at
the beach. Nice Photo Ops.
Weʼve never been here... but
this trip is on our list!
GETTING TO LAS ANIMAS / YELAPA
Los Meurtos Beach Pier : The Yelapa Water
Taxi Co-op operates off the pier. You can buy
one way tickets for 120 pesos or round trip for
250 at any of the ticket booths. In Yelapa or
Las Aminas, you can buy your tickets on the
boats or the dock.
Departures from Puerto Vallarta, Los
Muertos Pier at ; 9:45, 11:00, & 11:40 a.m., as
well as; 12:00, 1:30, 4:00, 5:00, & 6:00 p.m
Departures from Yelapa at ; 7:30, 8:30, 9:30
&10:30 a.m., as well as; 12:00, 3:00, 3:30, &
4:45 p.m.
Boca de Tomatlan: Water taxis also operate
from the beach in Boca.
Catch the bus for 60 pesos for “Mismaloya &
Boca de Tomatlan” in Old town at the corner
of B. Badillo & Constitution or B. Badillo and
Insurgentes.
Get off at the end of the line in Boca and walk
down to the cove where there will be a lot of
competition for your business.
Taking the water taxis from Boca gives you
close up views of the shoreline. From Los
Meurtos, you are crossing the bay.
Heading back, take the “ El Centro” bus at the Boca Turnaround.
17
PRIVATE PANGA TO LAS ANIMAS / YELAPA
An even better way to see the coast is by
private panga. Arrange for a panga for half a
day or a whole day to take you on a leisurely
cruise from Boca de Tomatlan south.
You can stop at any of the little villages along
the way or just pull into a deserted cove for a
swim.
The Coast line is beautiful and there is some
spectacular snorkeling.
Las Animas
Give Beto a call on his cell and arrange to
meet him on the beach in Boca de Tomatlan.
044-322-121-1309. (Dial the whole number)
His rates vary depending on the season
from 1000 to 1500 pesos.
Heʼs a great guide and lots of fun.
The Boat is yours for the day. We left
around 10:30 AM and got back at 3:30
PM
Our destination was a small cove south
of Quimixto for some snorkeling.
Tell Beto and he will supply the masks
and flippers .
It was a beautiful trip down the
coast past some wonderful
private residences and Las
Animas with itʼs Palapa
restaurants.
The only way to see all of this
is by boat. There are no roads
here.
18
PRIVATE PANGA TO LAS ANIMAS / YELAPA
We snorkeled in warm,
tropical water surrounded
by hundreds of colorful fish.
Back aboard, Beto helps
identify the various species
we saw underwater.
There are several villages where
you can stop and have lunch.
That day, we brought a picnic
and Beto dropped us at an
unused Palapa on the beach. It
was a really beautiful spot.
Beto took drink orders and
headed off in the panga to
pickup beer and a margarita in
the town of Quimixto.
He was back in a flash, with a bucket of beers
and a hand carried margarita. Now thatʼs
service!
19
PRIVATE PANGA TO LAS ANIMAS / YELAPA
It was a great place for a picnic
and to enjoy a warm summer
afternoon.
This day trip is a wonderful way to experience the coastline and villages south of Puerto
Vallarta. Beto makes it all just great fun!
20
THE BOTANICAL GARDENS
The Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens is an educational research center and pleasure
garden high in the Sierra Madre Mountains. These gardens are easily accessible, just 12
miles south of Puerto Vallarta on Hwy 200.
Located on 20 acres, the botanical collections feature over 3,000 different species of plants.
The gardens are in a unique tropical dry forest ecosystem at 1,300 feet above sea level
Against the breathtaking backdrop of soaring mountain peaks, there is much to experience:
Palm Gardens, Rose Garden, Tree Fern Grotto, Orchid House, Jungle Trails, Tropical Bird
Watching, Agave Gardens, displays of Mexican Wildflowers and the Carnivorous Plant
Collection.
Stroll the grounds, have lunch in the main building restaurant overlooking the crystal clear
Rio Los Horcones or head down into the valley for a hike along the river.
Getting There: From Old
Town, board the “El
Tuito” bus at the corner
of Carranzas and
Aguacate. Fare is 15
pesos each way. The bus
lets you off on the main
highway at the entrance to
the Botanical Gardens.
A Taxi ride is about 20
USD each way.
21
EL TUITO
Small-town Charm Just an Hour Away:
El Tuito is a 1700ʼs Mexican village with a
population of less than 4000. It is the Capital of
Cabo Corrientes, the municipality
encompassing the southern side of Bahia
Banderas.
The Bus lets you off in the Zocolo, town square,
where you will find most of the action or lack
thereof.
Stroll through the streets among the
colonial buildings painted with a mixture of
local clays that gives their walls a unique
orange tinge.
Cottage industries
abound, from
organic coffee and
artisan cheese to
raicilla, the local
“moonshine.”
Be sure to stop by “The
Cookie Factory” in a
house at #9, down the
street on the far left of
the square. Just ask
anyone where it is.
Itʼs a family operation
with everything baked in
a wood fired adobe
oven.
El Tuito is not for everyone. You wonʼt find wi-fi-friendly coffee shops, chic restaurants, ATMs
or overnight accommodations. But as you stroll around town, poking into shops and cafes,
youʼll find yourself suspended in the timeless beauty of a typical day in a traditional Mexican
town.
Getting There: Take “El Tuito” bus departing from the corner of V. Carranza and Aguacate
in Old Town. Fare is 20 Persos and the trip is about 50 minutes.
22
MAYTO/TEHUAMIXTLE
A three day road trip to explore hidden beaches and quaint villages South of PV.
For a chance to experience
deserted beaches, really fresh
seafood in a tiny fishing village
and Mexico as it was before any
development; plan a trip out to
Mayto and Tehuamixtle .
These villages are outside
Banderas Bay, South of Cabo
Corrientes. The trip is a 2 hour
drive from Old Town.
It can be slow going on the gravel
road from El Tuito out to the
coast. But itʼs all about the
journey and the rewards at the
end of the road.
Mayto has an endless deserted
beach and one small hotel and
restaurant. Plan to overnight
here.
Hotel Mayto is relatively new, very
clean and comfortable. Rates of
480 Pesos / Person.
333-177-2184.
The restaurant at the hotel is the
only game in town.
Take a long walk on the beach,
relax under a palapa, bring a good
book and have your camera
ready.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS: Drive south from Old Town on MX 200 to El Tuito. At the end of
the Plaza, turn left and zero out your Kilometer Counter. There is a sign to Hotel Mayto
there somewhere. Youʼll be driving on new paved road, but donʼt get too comfortable, it
ends soon.
Kilometer Waytpoints to Mayto :
1. 21K - Turn right at schoolyard in Llano Grande.
(at some point before the turn to Mayto, you bump up onto paved road again)
2. 37K - Turn right - and follow signs to Hotel Mayto out at the beach.
From Mayto to Tehuamixtle : From the hotel, go back to the main road and make a right.
Turn right again in a kilometer or so at the fork in the road. This takes you down toward the
cove and the Entrance to “Tehua.”
23
MAYTO/TEHUAMIXTLE
On your second day, head on
down to the tiny fishing village of
Tehuamixtle (the locals call it
Tehua ) to explore and have
lunch.
The place for fresh fish and
oysters is the restaurant along
the docks on the right side of the
harbor.
.
We ordered oysters and the waiter
walked over to the water, pulled up a
burlap bag, and opened a dozen of
the freshest oysters weʼve ever had.
They had gotten them that morning
from the rocks across the harbor.
Oysters here are served at ocean
temperature with a variety of salsas.
After lunch, make the short drive
further south to Villa del Mar .
Follow the signs to El Cielito , a
charming hotel with one, two, and
three bedroom casitas and a
restaurant overlooking another
endless beach.
The rooms are clean and itʼs a great
place for your second night on the
road. (the ONLY place, really)
Weʼve not stayed here yet, but will on
our next trip out there!

VALLARTA ADVENTURES
There are a number of Tour Operators in PV. They offer packages that include Zip
Lining, sailing, diving, and ATV Tours.
Be aware of the little booths and individuals who offer free trips like these on the
street. They are Time Share salesmen and before your trip, youʼll be treated to a
couple of hours of hard sell.
If you want to do tours like these, book directly through the main office or at one of
the booths at the pier in Old Town.
Here is a sample of some of Vallarta Adventures Tours. Havenʼt done them, but they

I wanted to give thanks to the guys that took our group out for the Outdoor
Adventure. We went on December 28th. Carlos, Ramone, Pepe, "Cassandra"
are just a few of the guys. They were absolutely fabulous, they made the
adventure! I think they work very hard and in very rough conditions. We were
very happy with our tour and would recommend it to anyone and would do it
again in a heart beat... Thank you and thanks to the guys, we had a blast!
